Max: Come in. Hi.
Diane: Well, hello. I'll just assume that our employer is not on the premises.
Max: You're right, Jason's not here yet.
Diane: So you're not on the clock, so to speak.
Max: Not yet.
Diane: Neither am I.
[Max chuckles]
[Diane laughs]
Max: Wait -- wait -- he's going to be back any second, though, so we should really -
Diane: Jason isn't Sonny. He has made it very clear that he respects our private lives.
Max: Oh yeah?
Diane: Mm-hmm. Oh, you.
Max: Come on.
Max: Uh...
Jason: This -- this isn't going to work.
Patrick: You're addicted, I told you.
Robin: I am not addicted.
Patrick: Ok, then what are you doing?
Robin: I'm checking my email.
Patrick: On your pregnancy blog. Still getting slagged?
Robin: Well, it's about fifty-fifty now.
Patrick: Yeah? How many hits you got?
Robin: 712.
Patrick: Hmm. Got 1150.
Robin: Liar.
Patrick: I tell you, and they're actually quite positive. Maybe it's because I'm blogging from Jake's, or maybe's just because I'm such a fun guy.
Robin: Right. Elizabeth, could you please check Patrick's blog for me, because, you know, I'm not supposed to. I think he's exaggerating just a little bit.
Elizabeth: Oh, no. I am not getting in the middle of the two of you in person or in cyberspace.
[Elevator dings]
Elizabeth: Hi. How may I help you?
Man: Dr. Ford, please. My name is Curtis Reitzel.
Elizabeth: Ok, do you have an appointment?
Curtis: That would be why I'm here, yes.
Elizabeth: Well, I'll let him know you're here.
Curtis: Dr. Scorpio. Been a while.
Robin: Curtis. Curtis: Looks like you didn't need my daughter after all.
Jax: Hey.
Carly: Hey.
Jax: Hi.
Carly: Hi.
Jax: You left early this morning.
Carly: Yeah. Getting used to the 5:01. It's kind of nice, sort of. It's really quiet, and it gives me a time to collect my thoughts before I go visit Michael. Sometimes I even get a whole train car to myself.
Jax: Really?
Carly: Yeah.
Jax: Makes for a long day though, doesn't it?
Carly: So does your conference calls that keep you up all night long. What was that about?
Jax: Yeah, I'm sorry about that. The Sydney deal had some major issues and I didn't want to wake you when I came to bed. But I was about to call you. How did it go with Sonny?
[Knock on door]
Sonny: Hey.
Kate: Hi.
Sonny: You want some great coffee?
Kate: I do.
Sonny: All right.
Kate: But I can't start my day until I know.
Sonny: What?
Kate: Have you made a decision?
Sonny: Oh. You mean what we talked about last night.
Kate: Yeah.
Sonny: You know what? You don't have to worry about me ever going back to the business.
Lucky: Sam? Hey, I got your message. What's wrong?
Sam: All right. We don't have much time. Anthony Zacchara's people are going to be here in a couple hours to open up the place, so I need to know, do you know a Dr. Von Scheerman?
Lucky: Scheerman. That's my dad.
Sam: That's what I thought.
Lucky: He sent this to you?
Sam: Yes, to my email, and I have no idea how he got my address.
Lucky: "Liberate the stowaway marbles. Wheel them down to papa at the purple papoose"?
Sam: Yeah. What does it mean?
Tracy: Sam?
Sam: Tracy?
Tracy: Lucky, have you heard from your father?
Robin: You remember Curtis, don't you?
Patrick: Yes.
Robin: Father of Stacey's baby.
Patrick: Very well.
Robin: How is Rebecca doing?
Curtis: My daughter's in good heal; doing as well as can be expected after this hospital killed her mother.
Patrick: Curtis, I understand why you were upset before. Stacey had just died. But there's no excuse for treating Dr. Scorpio like that.
Curtis: She tried to steal my kid.
Patrick: Show some respect, or you can leave.
Curtis: Oh, I get it. You're the dad. You don't know what you're in for.
Elizabeth: Um, Mr. Reitzel, you are welcome to wait in Dr, Ford's office.
Curtis: He'd better have that insurance settlement check ready.
Patrick: Hedge fund market a little slow lately?
Curtis: Rebecca has a trust fund. Do you have one in place for your child? Given that you're HIV-positive, like Stacey was -
Patrick: HIV had nothing to do with Stacey's death.
Curtis: You'd better be ready regardless. She dies; it's on you to raise the kid.
Jason: I don't want to walk in on something like this again.
Max: I -- I understand.
Diane: With all due respect, I mean, the door was closed, I mean, albeit unsecured. And yes, yes, we could have been more discreet, but we are not on the clock and unlike your predecessor, you have made it clear that our personal lives are not your concern.
Jason: It is when you're in my office.
Diane: Point taken.
Max: I'm so sorry.
Jason: It's ok. You're in my office; you're on my time, Max.
Max: I don't want to let you down, boss, now more than ever. So -
Diane: You are terrific. He's terrific.
Max: Oh, let me get the schedule to the new guys.
Diane: I sincerely appreciate the way that you just handled that situation.
Jason: It's over. Let's get to work. What -- what do we need to do?
Diane: You are a joy to represent. You really are, Jason. You are calm and rational. You are clear in your expectations. I'm going to miss you.
Jason: You're not going to quit because of Max, are you?
Diane: Oh, I'm not going anywhere. But I just can't imagine that you'll be running things much longer.
Sonny: No more second thoughts, ok, about anything -- about the organization -- I'm out of the organization. Here's what I want -- here's what I want to do. I want to keep building a new life, right, that keeps everybody safe.
Kate: Ok.
Sonny: Ok, what?
Kate: Last night you were so conflicted and now you're so certain. I'm just wondering what made it all click all of a sudden.
Sonny: Carly came by. It's not a big deal, ok? She came by to -- Alexis sent her to convince me to give up Kristina. Kate: Yeah, Alexis came to see me, too.
Sonny: She did? Well, she comes in, we start to fight, right, and she couldn't wait to tell me that Mac closed the investigation on Michael's shooting, and that the bullet ricocheted, and that Ian Devlin was working alone.
Kate: Well, that's good, right?
Sonny: Right.
Kate: It means there's some sort of closure.
Sonny: Carly just came by to throw it in my face that my life is dangerous and, you know, whether I'm in the mob, whether I'm out of the mob -
Kate: I really hate that she does that to you, sonny.
Sonny: That was my life with Carly. Angry, frustration, chaos, a fight that never ended. We were miserable. But I just want you to know that Carly and I are finally over, done.
Carly: Going to Sonny's was a complete waste of time, just like I knew it would be. I got absolutely nowhere.
Jax: How can Sonny continue to put Kristina in danger after what happened to Michael?
Carly: Because sonny doesn't believe there's danger anymore. He thinks the whole world is safe because he's decided to live a squeaky clean life.
Jax: Thanks for trying. I really appreciate it. I'm sorry if it upset you.
Carly: Everything changed between me and sonny when Michael was shot. We don't speak the same language anymore.
Lucky: I never hear from my dad when he's on the road. You know that.
Sam: Yeah, any -- anyway, we kind of thought you were with him.
Tracy: I came back.
Lucky: Was it a little too much adventure?
Tracy: Well, actually, I had a choice. I could either join him on the pub crawl or come home. I made the more rational choice. Your father should have sobered up by now. I should have heard from him.
Sam: Why would you think that?
Tracy: I took his case of money. And according to my calculations, he's been flat broke for ten days. So if I haven't heard from him, you haven't heard from him, where is he?
Lulu: Here's the piece on organic cotton and natural dye.
Maxie: Did you check for brand placement? Kate doesn't want to run free ads.
Lulu: Yeah, yeah, I put all the brand names in bold caps.
Maxie: What are you looking at?
Lulu: Johnny moved into Jax's penthouse. He can see us from here.
Maxie: Are you sure he can see us?
Lulu: Yeah, as long as the lights are on. We did some serious spying last night.
Maxie: Really?
Lulu: Mm-hmm, yeah. We watched the janitor clean up. It was real exciting.
Maxie: Well, how cool for you, Lulu. Now you'll be able to spy on Johnny, like, 24/7.
Lulu: Yeah. I don't need to police Johnny. I know he's committed to me, which is why you should give up throwing yourself at him.
Maxie: Just being friendly.
Lulu: No, you're being desperate, either to mess with me or to get Johnny's attention, but either way, it's not going to work.
Kate: Carly, excuse me, I'd like a word.
Carly: I'm busy.
Kate: Well, I'll try to keep it brief.
Carly: Yet another reason I didn't want miss Howard or her magazine in my hotel. I guess we'll talk about this later. What is it?
Kate: Well, I would like to talk about what you did to sonny last night.
[Carly giggles]
Kate: It was wrong, Carly. It was cruel.
Carly: Poor Sonny. His ex-wife is so insensitive. Thank god he has wonderful you to protect him.
Kate: Look, Carly, I appreciate that this is a very difficult time for you. I can only imagine what it would be like to have a son in a coma.
Carly: Ok. Don't talk about Michael. You don't know what I'm feeling and you have no idea how much effort it's taking not to rip your stupid hair out of your head.
Kate: Ok, I get it, Carly. I get it. You don't like me. But do you really think that it's fair, that it's right, for you to torment Sonny just to make yourself feel better? To blame him for Michael, to force him to give up his sons, and then to continue to rail on him? Look, if you need some grief therapy, you should go get it. You should go to Jason. You should go to Jax. Just leave Sonny the hell alone.
Carly: Oh, that's what this is about. You feel threatened by me. You think I'm going to take sonny away from you. I gotta tell you, that's exactly what you deserve.
Jason: Who says I'm leaving?
Diane: Oh, no. Now don't misunderstand me. I think everyone; everyone would prefer to have you in charge. Sonny can be very difficult. Unfortunately, the organization is his life, and I just don't think he'll be able to stay away much longer. Last night, I dropped off to Sonny the final executed documents for the renunciation of parental custody. He got very upset, tore up the papers, tossed them into the trash can. I suppose it was too much to expect that he would simply pop them into the nearest filing cabinet. They do, after all, sever all ties with his sons. But it's clear that Sonny is having second thoughts.
Jason: Can you blame him?
Diane: I tried to tell him that things were running very smoothly and that's not what he wanted to hear. Sonny is addicted to the power, the mystique of being a mob kingpin, the criminal in charge. And I just don't think he's going to be able to stay away.
Spinelli: Black coffee, orange soda on the side.
Lloyd: Oh, the terrorist lover.
Spinelli: I suggest you pay for your beverage and depart.
Lloyd: You took me by surprise last night.
Spinelli: Yeah, the proverbial sucker punch, and particularly apt.
Lloyd: Are you trying to insult me?
Spinelli: Now there's a question to ponder.
Lloyd: You hang out with terrorists, you'd beer get ready for people to get angry. Tell me, do you pat her down for explosives before you take her out?
Diane: I don't know who you are, sir, but you've just made a grievous error in judgment.
Elizabeth: Robin?
Robin: Please do not tell Patrick that I'm crying. He'll flip out and overcompensate, and anyway, I'm being ridiculous.
Elizabeth: No, not at all. That guy was creepy.
Robin: I mean, I know better than anyone. I -- I'm a doctor. I know that Stacey didn't die because of HIV. She bled out because she had an erupted placenta. And I also know that HIV doesn't really cause any problems when you're pregnant, as long as you take care of yourself. But then I also think about Stacey and everything that she wanted to give her child and everything that that little girl is going to miss, you know? And it just makes me feel really selfish. Elizabeth: Why, because you want to be a mom? You know that every pregnancy involves risks.
Robin: But HIV is a chronic and potentially life-threatening disease. You know, I could develop complications at any time.
Elizabeth: Don't even talk like that.
Robin: What if I die of aids? Or what if I die of something else and my child's alone? I don't want that to happen. Diane: Mr. Spinelli is a valued employee. And my client, Mr. Morgan, has a responsibility to protect his employees and maintain his property. Now you are posing an active threat to an unarmed victim, namely, Mr. Spinelli. So deadly force would be justified and would, in fact, be defensible in a court of law.
Lloyd: Ok, look. I can explain.
Diane: Mr. Spinelli, do you still feel that your person and life are at risk?
Spinelli: Most certainly. This hostile and unpleasant, not to mention ignorant, individual poses a most threatening mien.
Lloyd: Ok, listen. I'm sorry, ok? Just don't let them kill me.
Spinelli: Apologize for insulting the fair lady I was with last night.
Lloyd: I apologize.
Spinelli: Say you were wrong.
Lloyd: I was wrong. Completely.
Spinelli: Give me all your money.
Lloyd: All right, here. Take it. All right? Take it all.
Spinelli: Donate all of this to the Red Cross, which gladly helps all people in need, regardless of race or creed.
Diane: Consider it done. And we will just be taking all of your information so that the Red Cross may give you a receipt.
Lloyd: You know you don't have to do that.
Diane: And, of course, we will be keeping a copy for our records. Very well. You can go now.
Spinelli: Most grateful thanks.
Diane: Mr. Grasshopper that was my pleasure.
Jason: Ok. Why was that guy pounding you?
Spinelli: The jackal escorted the lovely nurse Leyla Mir to a celebration at the metro court last night, where she was the target of a racial slur by that bigoted Neanderthal, and as her date and a fair-thinking member of the human race; the Jackal was compelled to defend her and felled the odious beast with a single punch.
Jason: You hit him?
Spinelli: I knocked him out.
Milo: No chance. Unless, of course, he was too drunk to duck, then, maybe, you know. If you had hit him at just the right angle -- but, Spinelli, you've got to be more careful than that. For real.
Max: Yeah, Milo's right, Spinelli. You don't go around starting fights. I mean, it's not as if you can defend yourself. Spinelli: You know, the jackal has made a concerted effort to man up and I think I'm clearly making progress.
Jason: Stop, Spinelli. Listen. Defending your date is a great thing to do, ok? But you need to be careful. If something like that happens, I want you to call me. I don't -- I don't want you to get hurt.
Kate: I'm not threatened by you.
Carly: You should be, because you don't compare on any level. Sonny and I will always be connected, and you're just a bloodless trophy.
Kate: Great. Well, I can see we're not going to get anywhere, so if you could please, please leave sonny alone.
Carly: You know what I think scares you the most? That this thing that sonny and I have, that we've always had, we felt it long before you ever came along. Sonny's hated me and loved me, sometimes both at the same time.
Kate: But he's getting on with his life.
Carly: You'll never make Sonny as happy as I did. You will never make him as miserable as I did. Hell, you can't even make him as angry as I make him right now. Because you and Sonny, you don't share anything that's lasting or deep.
Kate: He's outgrown you, Carly.
Carly: No, he hasn't. Or I wouldn't make you so insecure.
Kate: Maybe you should be insecure. You know, you're married to a wonderful husband who deserves better than you.
Carly: My marriage to Jax has nothing to do with this. You will never be enough for Sonny.
Kate: You don't know what you're talking about.
Carly: Everyone can see how weak and clingy you are. How deluded you are, by thinking that sonny's going to morph into the kind of man that you need.
Kate: It's very simple, Carly. I believe in Sonny, and I believe he's changing his life.
Carly: Sonny doesn't change. He's selfish to the bone. And sooner or later -- I'm betting sooner -- he's going to see that you're not the angel that's going to heal all his wounds. You're not the Madonna in the designer dress. See, you're a pathetic workaholic who will never satisfy him, in bed or anywhere else.
Kate: Wow. You like to consider yourself quite the expert, don't you? But for all your bravado, you don't know Sonny at all.
Carly: Want to bet? That's her fourth free sample.
